America's Favorite Gold Coin
Since 2006
Authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, the Gold American Buffalo was first released by the U.S. Mint in 2006, making history as the Mint's first-ever 24-karat (.9999 fine) gold coin.
Each year, the Mint issues both a bullion version for circulation and a limited number of Proof coins, celebrated for their mirror-like finish and exceptional craftsmanship. Only a small fraction of these proofs achieve the coveted Proof 70 grade from leading certification services such as NGC or PCGS, marking them as flawless examples.

Investment Grade
Proof 70 Gold American Buffalos represent more than just collectible coins—they are investment-grade assets. Their rarity, combined with unmatched quality and a brilliant finish, makes them highly sought after by serious investors.
Unlike standard bullion, which fluctuates with commodity prices, Proof 70 Buffalos derive value from their limited availability, collector demand, and flawless condition. This stability gives them a unique role as a long-term store of wealth.
The U.S. Gold Bureau recommends Gold Buffalo Proof 70 coins as a cornerstone of any diversified portfolio. Their prestige, scarcity, and enduring appeal make them a powerful tool for wealth preservation and long-term stability.

Centennial Edition
Celebrate the 100th anniversary of one of the U.S. Mint's most iconic designs—the American Buffalo. Originally created by James Earle Fraser, a student of the legendary sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this classic design first appeared on the Type I Buffalo Nickel in 1913.
To honor this centennial milestone, the U.S. Mint issued a special American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Reverse Proof Coin. Unlike traditional proofs, which feature frosted design elements over a mirror-like background, the reverse proof technique inverts this effect—placing the brilliant mirrored finish on the coin's design while the background carries a frosted texture.
The result is a stunning contrast that highlights every intricate detail of Fraser's timeless artwork. This anniversary edition not only celebrates the heritage of American coin design but also showcases the Mint's modern advancements in craftsmanship over the last century.

A composite Native American portrait, believed to have been modeled from three chiefs of different tribes—Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons.
An American Bison, commonly called a buffalo, stands atop a mound of dirt. Most historians agree Fraser's model was Black Diamond, a bison that lived at the New York Central Park Zoo in the 1910s.

Historic Issue
In 2001, the U.S. Mint released the American Buffalo Commemorative Silver Dollar, one of only two commemorative issues that year. Authorized by Congress under the American Buffalo Coin Commemorative Coin Act of 2000 (Public Law 106-375), these coins revived Fraser's classic Native American and Buffalo designs.

Fraser's original Type 1 Buffalo Nickel (early 1913) featured the bison atop a raised mound of dirt. Later in 1913, the design was modified to a Type 2 version, with the mound flattened to better protect the coin's details from wear. The Type 2 continued in circulation until 1938, except for 1922, 1932, and 1933, when no nickels were struck.
