History of the Silver American Eagle
First released by the U.S. Mint on November 24, 1986, the Silver American Eagle has become the world's most popular silver bullion coin. Each coin is struck from one troy ounce of .999 fine silver and has been produced at three locations over the years: Philadelphia, San Francisco, and West Point Mints.
The obverse is inspired by Adolph A. Weinman's 1916 "Walking Liberty" half dollar, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful U.S. coin designs ever created. Lady Liberty strides forward gracefully, draped in the American flag, symbolizing strength and freedom.
